Spectacular Events In the Bible You’ve Probably Never Thought About: Jesus Heals the Maimed

Healing_the_Maimed

“[29] And Jesus departed from thence, and came nigh unto the sea of Galilee; and went up into a mountain, and sat down there. [30] And great multitudes came unto him, having with them those that were lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and cast them down at Jesus’ feet; and he healed them: [31] Insomuch that the multitude wondered, when they saw the dumb to speak, the maimed to be whole, the lame to walk, and the blind to see: and they glorified the God of Israel.” Matt. 15:29-31

When speaking of the earthly healing ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ, we have often pictured the events of the Lord healing the crippled, blind or deaf. The lame have their ability to walk restored; the blind have their vision restored, and the deaf have their hearing restored. All jaw-dropping miracles. But what about the halt and maimed? Do you realize what it means to be halt or maimed? Well, the very same scriptures which tell us that Jesus healed these people, also tells us the exact meaning of the words:

“[8] Wherefore if thy HAND or thy FOOT offend thee, CUT THEM OFF, and cast them FROM THEE: it is better for thee to enter into life HALT or MAIMED, rather than having TWO HANDS or TWO FEET to be cast into everlasting fire.” Matt. 18:8

And again:

“[43] And if thy HAND offend thee, CUT IT OFF: it is better for thee to enter into life MAIMED, than having TWO HANDS to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: … [45] And if thy FOOT offend thee, CUT IT OFF: it is better for thee to enter HALT into life, than having TWO FEET to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:” Mark 9: 43 & 45-46

Note that both Matthew and Mark clearly delineate the meaning of halt and maimed. Specifically, being “halt” is contrasted with having “two feet”, while “maimed” is contrasted with a person that has “two hands”. Matthew says that it’s “better for thee” to be “halt or maimed, RATHER than having TWO HANDS or TWO FEET. The meaning of the words are clear. A man that is “halt” has only one leg or no legs. A man that is “maimed” has only one hand or no hands.

Now that we know the Bible’s exact definitions of these words, how did Jesus heal these people? Did you ever think about that? I’ll bet you haven’t. The astonishing and mind-boggling truth is that the Bible declares these people were made “whole”:

“…the maimed to be whole…” Matt. 15:31

When the Lord Jesus Christ healed the blind, did He give them a pair of glasses? When He healed the deaf, did He give them hearing aids or “cochlear implants”? When He healed the lame, did He provide them with crutches or wheelchairs? Don’t be silly. The blind had their vision restored, the deaf had their hearing restored, and the lame had their walking restored.

When we think of a blind man, most blind men have eyes, but they simply cannot see. The deaf have ears, but cannot hear. The lame have legs, but cannot walk. But this is not so with the halt and maimed. A halt or maimed man has at least one arm or one leg COMPLETELY MISSING. This means that their deficiency is taken one step further than that of the blind, deaf or lame. It also means that there’s only one true way that a man with only one arm or leg could be made “whole” – GOD LITERALLY SPOKE-INTO-EXISTENCE NEW ARMS, LEGS, HANDS AND FEET FOR THESE PEOPLE! Stop and think about that for a minute. But the amazement doesn’t stop there. The Bible says that this jaw-dropping event was witnessed in the flesh. The Scriptures testify that the throngs of people which followed the Lord literally saw this happen with their own eyes:

“[30] And great multitudes came unto him, having with them those that were…MAIMED…and cast them down at Jesus’ feet; and HE HEALED THEM: [31] Insomuch that the multitude wondered, WHEN THEY SAWTHE MAIMED TO BE WHOLE…” Matt. 15:30-31

The Centurion Knew

Regardless of the scriptural evidence of how the Lord Jesus made these people “whole”, there will still be those who argue; “I don’t believe that! I don’t believe that Jesus literally restored a new arm or leg to those that had missing limbs.” Well, too bad. Clearly you don’t understand the power of God’s word. If you don’t understand the true power of the words that come out of God’s Mouth, maybe you should take note of what the Centurion of Capernaum once said, for he understood the true authority of God’s words. When the Centurion had a sick servant and wanted Jesus to heal him, do you know what he said?

“…SPEAK THE WORD ONLY, and my servant shall be healed.” Matt. 8:8

Amen! The Centurion knew who Jesus was. I mean, he really knew. He knew that it was the words of God, the words of Jesus, that had the power and authority to command and shape the universe around him. Therefore he simply said to Jesus: “…speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed.” He was right.

When the Lord Jesus Christ cast out devils, do you know how He did it? With His words (Mt. 8:16). When the Lord Jesus Christ raised a dead man from the grave, do you know how He did it? With His words (Jn. 11:43). When Jesus withstood the temptations of the Devil, how did He do it? With his words (Lk. 4:1-13, etc.). When the Lord Jesus Christ created the universe itself, how did he do it? Do you really have to ask?

The word of God is THE MOST POWERFUL FORCE IN THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE. It’s an ETERNAL FORCE existing even outside of time and space. It is the Force that holds all things together (and I don’t mean STAR WARS). The Bible says:

“[16] For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: [17] And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.” Col. 1:16-17

Jesus said:

“Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.” Matt. 24:35

Whenever those words are put into play, NOTHING ON THE FACE OF THIS EARTH (or off it) CAN STOP THOSE WORDS FROM COMING TO FRUITION. I can’t stop it. You can’t stop it. President Obama can’t stop it. The Pope can’t stop it. “ISIS” with their mad bombers and head-choppin’ crazies can’t stop it. The United Nations can’t stop it. You can bring in all the scientists, biologists, geologists and smarty-pantologists with all their microscopes, telescopes and fancy-schmancy computers, and not only can they not study it, they can’t do anything about it. “Science” is just as null, void and helpless as a box of rocks when it comes to having any power or authority over the words of God. If Jesus speaks (and, believe me, He will), “science” will do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about stopping it. Nothing will stop it.

Why Devils Fear Him

When Jesus literally spoke to the stinking, four-day-old body of a dead man, shouting; “Lazarus, come forth,” who was going to stop the physical body of Lazarus from obeying the Voice of the same One who spoke the universe into existence? Nobody. The dead body of Lazarus had no choice but to “come forth”, and come forth it did! (see Jn. 11:1-44)

Unclean spirits also recognize that when Jesus speaks they have no option but to obey. This is why when Legion was in the tombs of the Gadarenes the devils literally begged Him:

“[31]…If thou cast us out, suffer us to go away into the herd of swine. [32] And he said unto them, Go. …” Matt. 8:31-32

The Devils knew that once the Lord Jesus spoke those words and commanded them to “Go”, that, regardless of their own wills, they had no choice but to go where the Lord told them to go. The words of the Lord Jesus Christ overrode and overpowered the devil’s own ability to control themselves. This is how the Lord Jesus was able to cast out devils simply by speaking to them – and they KNEW IT, and they FEARED HIM because of it! This is why when the Legion saw Jesus he shouted:

What have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? art thou come hither to torment us before the time?” Matt. 8:29

The devils knew that whenever “the time” arrived for Jesus to send them off into Hell (their place of “torment”) that they would have no choice but to go there. And this is why they begged Him to send them into the herd of swine, instead. And He did.

This same authoritative and commanding power was made manifest when the Lord Jesus Christ healed the halt and maimed. When a blind man says to us that he is blind, we must take his word for it. It is not obvious that he is “blind”, for he still has two eyes. Likewise for the deaf. But when a maimed or halt man says to us that he has no arm or leg, the evidence is right in front of our face. We can clearly see that he is limbless. The feat of the Lord Jesus Christ making these people “whole” must have been a sight to behold! Here comes Captain Hook to see Jesus. He then takes off his hook, casts it aside, and then leaves with two hands. Captain Peg-leg then pays Jesus a visit with the same results. Captain Peg-leg is now “Captain Legs”, as he walks away on two feet. Is it any wonder that they glorified the God of Israel? Amen!

It’s No Big Deal

The funny thing about all this is how the Bible seems to downplay these amazing miracles. It’s not that they’re unimportant, it’s just that the Bible really doesn’t say a lot about them. When God created the universe, the Bible only devotes one chapter to its creation. One little chapter! The stars, for example, are only given five words: “…he made the stars also.” (Gen. 1:16) When the Lord Jesus Christ healed the maimed and halt, the Bible simply says: “..the maimed to be whole…” (Mt. 15:31). It’s as if none of it’s a big deal. And you know what? If truth be told, when it comes to the Voice of God, it really is no big deal. It’s no big deal for God to speak and create a universe. It’s no big deal for Him to speak and create a new arm or leg. It’s no big deal for God to raise a dead man from the grave. IT’S NO BIG DEAL. It’s simply a matter of the Lord speaking. Again, the Centurion knew this.

So when the Lord speaks and says; “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Rom. 10:13), who’s going to stop the Lord from saving that lost man, if that lost man cries out to Jesus for salvation? Nobody. That man’s as good as in Heaven with the door shut, if he puts his faith in Christ’s words:

“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Rom. 10:17

If the Lord Jesus Christ can simply speak a word and form the heaven and earth; or simply speak a word and create a new arm, leg, hand or foot; or simply speak a word and “the wind and the sea obey him” (Mk. 4:41); what do you suppose will happen when the Lord speaks the following:

“Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels”. (Matt. 25:41)

Just as sure as the halt and maimed were made whole by the spoken words of the Lord Jesus Christ, so too, will these words one day come to pass – and no force in this universe will stop it.

  1. Oops! You’re right, Bro. Daniels. I was writing from memory and missed that detail. I’ll fix it, however. Thanks so much for the feedback and input, brother.

    1. It’s amazing all the things the Lord lets us notice, when 1) we take the scriptures literally, and especially 2) when we *have* the scriptures that we can take literally!

      1. Amen, brother! I thank my God that when I look up at the stars at night and acknowledge that my Saviour MADE all those stars; I can likewise, look down at the King James Bible in my hands and know that He preserved each and every one of those words. Praise God!

“For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of THE SCRIPTURES might have hope.” Romans 15:4

  2. I am amazed at your comprehension and knowledge of the word! You are truly blessed! Praise be to our God, Lord and savior 😁 I thoroughly enjoyed your writing on these scriptures. Have you written a book? Thank you for your understanding, and awe! of the written word. Hope all is well with your soul. Keep up the good work, son.
