Christian Discernment & Bible Versions: Food for Thought

“Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?” 1Kings 3:9

The key to the discerning of spirits is comprised of two parts. Without these two parts discernment is futile. For the Christian, these two parts include:

(1) The Holy Spirit – This means receiving the in-dwelling of the Holy Spirit by the new birth. Such an action will invite “the Spirit of truth” (the Holy Spirit) which will lead you and guide you unto all truth (John 3:3, 16:13, Ptr. 1:23).

(2) The Holy Scriptures – The scriptures are identified as “a more sure word” than hearing a literal voice from heaven. They are written words magnified above God’s name, which are preserved to outlast “heaven and earth”, and are “a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart”. Through them one acquires faith and the written standard against which all things are measured (see 2Ptr. 1:19, Rom. 15:4, Psa. 138:2, 12:6-7, Matt. 13:31, 24:35, Heb. 4:12, Rom. 10:17 & Isa. 8:20).

The Trial of Santa Claus: Is Santa Guilty of Crimes Against God? – PART 4

Santa Claus Deception

The Need to Exercise Discernment

Thus far in this series we’ve briefly covered the history of Santa Claus, and the reasons why understanding the motives and methods of the Adversary are detrimental in understanding the truth of what has happened through the evolution of the Santa legend. Two things regarding the Devil were noted as being especially important.

1.) Satan’s ability to fool people by presenting to them things which appear good on the outside, while inwardly being full of spiritual poison; and…

2.) Satan’s ability to counterfeit God and the things of God.

If you keep these two points in mind, you will quickly see the legitimacy of this series, and the need for Christians to exercise discernment (1Ptr. 5:8). Parts 1-3 have also made brief comments regarding Santa’s supposed “guilt”, but specifics have yet to be addressed. We’re now ready to address those specifics.

The Crimes of Santa Claus

As you follow these accusations, keep in mind that Santa Claus has gradually accumulated these attributes over the years. They were not given to him all at once. Santa’s evolution has been subtle, slowly growing from a mixture of different cultural traditions from different eras. Yet the end result of this admixture pictures an entity that matches the Lord Jesus Christ in so many particulars, that I believe it impossible for it to all be mere “coincidence”. The odds would be astronomical without some sort of guiding influence – an influence that’s centuries old. The question is, who, or what is that influence?

Additionally, the following list of charges leveled at Santa Claus outlining how he is guilty of crimes against God, are ordered from least to most offensive. Since we’re dealing in spiritual matters, not all of the charges will perfectly coincide with those described in a court of law. This doesn’t matter. This outline is specifically designed to help the Christian try the spirits whether they are of God” (1John 4:1). It adheres to the Bible (the Christian’s Standard of Judgement) and not necessarily to strict court laws and proceedings. I trust you get the idea.

“Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.” 1 Thess. 5:21

CHARGE #1: Trespassing, Breaking & Entering, Home Invasion

Has Santa Claus ever gotten permission from anyone, anywhere, written or otherwise, to enter their home at night while they’re asleep? I can say with 100% certainty that Santa has never received permission from anyone in person. Yet it’s reported that he travels the whole world in a single night, committing this very act, over and over again. In many cases, it’s said he enters the home through the chimney. How does he get past the chimney damper? Does he have a crowbar? At the very least, that’s known as “trespassing”. The act of invading another’s property without permission. At the worst, it’s Breaking & Entering or Home Invasion. Yes, I know, it’s comical to think about, and probably a little ridiculous, but I’m not the one perpetuating the concept. You say; “How does this characteristic of Santa Claus mirror the Lord Jesus Christ?” It doesn’t. Instead, the Bible says of Jesus;

“Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.” Rev. 3:20

If you find yourself shaking your head at the silliness of this first charge, keep reading. The charges get much more serious, and much worse.

CHARGE #2: Operation of a Crime Syndicate

The Santa Claus myth is kept alive annually by a spiritual organization of men (and sometimes women) who help perpetrate the Santa Claus fraud upon the public. These men and women, who dress in traditional Santa Claus attire, and pretend to actually be “Santa”, are seen by the score in shopping malls, in newspapers and on television. Although most members of this syndicate do not know each other personally, and are not united under a central organizing enterprise, they are united in spirit – the spirit of Santa.

Interestingly, the Lord Jesus Christ also has a spiritual organization composed of those who represent him. The difference is, Christ’s organization is not foisting a LIE upon the masses. The Bible says;

“And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch” Acts 11:26

“Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God.” 2 Cor. 5:20
