Satan: Master Counterfeiter
At the close of PART 2 we briefly touched on one of the primary objectives of the archenemy of God and man. The Devil, from the very start, has been a liar and deceiver [NOTE: This means “from the very start” of mankind (Gen. 1), not the start of himself (Ezk. 28:15). Before his fall, a fall which preceded Adam, Lucifer was a “perfect” creature. At that time he was neither a liar nor a deceiver, but by the time of Adam’s arrival, Lucifer had become “the great dragon…that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan”. (Rev. 12:9)].
Once one ventures beyond Genesis, and beyond mankind’s first encounter with the Adversary, you will discover that throughout history Satan has attempted, time and time again, to COUNTERFEIT God and the things of God. The reason he does this is because he wants to be “like the most High” (Isa. 14:12-14). He wants all to believe that he is God Himself.
Because of this maddening, all-consuming obsession, COUNTERFEITING GOD has become his standard operating procedure. His “modus operandi” – method of operation (a Latin phrase often used in legal circles to describe the operating habits of criminals). The Bible calls it his “wiles”. But regardless of whatever name you give it, Christians are admonished to “stand against” it (Eph. 6:11).
“ Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.” Eph. 6:10-13
A small sampling of satanic counterfeits found in scripture include; counterfeit churches, ministers, teachers, apostles, prophets, miracles, doctrines, angels, spirits, christs and gods. But this only touches the hem of the Devil’s deceptive garment. Many more plastic versions of the truth may be found. These include counterfeit persons, places and things, and counterfeit typologies (Satan as a lion, Satan as a shepherd, Satan as a rock, etc.). Understanding this satanic tactic lays the groundwork for discerning the fundamental problem behind Santa Claus. If you choose to reject that Satan is actively involved, today, in any of the methods described here, you will never be able to see how the Santa Claus myth has been used to undermine God. As Christ Jesus stated on many occasions; “He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.” (Mk. 4:9, etc.)
This is not deep doctrine. It’s elementary. And for the Bible-believing Christian it should be common knowledge. Remember, the Lord Jesus Christ admonished the Christian to; “Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.” (John 7:24) Identifying satanic counterfeits demands that one look past the outward “appearance”, otherwise it will simple appear as the truth. That’s its purpose – to deceive – to appear as “truth” when it is not. Now that we’ve been reminded of this, it’s time to apply these lessons to a real-world situation. The situation of Santa Claus.
