Truth be told, the word “Jupiter” appears a total of three times in scripture. Two of these appearances are in reference to the Roman god “Jupiter” – not the planet (Acts 14:12-13). The single reference to the planet itself may be found in Acts 19:35. Here we find a mysterious “image” falling to earth in connection with the goddess Diana. Paul writes:
“And when the townclerk had appeased the people, he said, Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there that knoweth not how that the city of the Ephesians is a worshipper of the great goddess Diana, and of the image which fell down from Jupiter?” Acts 19:35
Without even having begun a Bible study on the true identity of the Star, the scarcity of “Jupiter” in scripture, and the fact that all its appearances are negative (whether a direct reference to the Planet or not), should give the Christian reasonable ground to doubt the legitimacy of the “Star of Bethlehem” theory now built around the planet.
You probably didn’t realize this, but the vast majority of modern studies regarding the Star of Bethlehem, both Christian and non-Christian alike, have “astronomy tunnel-vision”. This means that while looking to the stars for answers is commendable on the surface, it’s actually the cause of error, due to the fact that no other scriptures outside of Matthew 2:1-11 are consulted. Instead, once the immediate context is read, astronomy replaces Bible study. This is unfortunate. It’s always wrong to search for answers outside the Bible, before fully searching for answers inside the Bible. Anything less is private interpretation and an avoidance of comparing “line upon line” and “precept on precept”.
While it’s always nice to have science support Bible facts, it’s never right to consult science for answers to the exclusion of it. Science can be misleading (yes it can!). What this subject really needs is a good injection of King James Bible. Doing so will give the Bible-believer the full counsel of God on the matter, instead of hindering the truth with scientific guesswork and theories.
The time of year will soon be upon us when many will be thinking about, and asking questions about, the Star of Bethlehem. Isn’t it time the Lord reaped the full glory from the truth which lies behind this mystery? The Bible has the answer to this great Star of Wonder – it’s not the planet Jupiter (or any other celestial body).
Star of the King, an easy-to-read, 180-page book from Sword-In-Hand Publishing, finally puts the riddle to rest by presenting overwhelming scriptural evidence that Bethlehem’s Star was much more than what most have ever imagined.
